She left South Africa in 1989 and has lived and worked in a few different countries due to her husband’s career. She has been living in San Diego with her husband Mike and their four sons, Liam, Joey, Elie and Nadav since 2008 and is currently working as a full time Mom. Karen has always taken an active role in the various Jewish communities she has lived in and has served on various school committees. Wanting to ensure that her sons and other boys in her community have the opportunity to receive a Torah education without leaving home, means that Karen has a vested interest in helping SCY High thrive for many years to come.
Hayley Bortz - Hayley's family is a member of the Adat Yeshurun community and her eldest child, Daniel, was a member of the first graduating class at SCY High. Originally from South Africa, she has been in the USA since 1999. Hayley grew up in an Orthodox community and has chosen the same environment for her kids. After her son graduated from Hebrew Day School, he attended 9th grade at La Jolla High and was very unhappy. When SCY High opened the next year it was a blessing, and being a pioneer in that school, in Daniel's mind, was the only thing to do. SCY High has been his passion ever since. He was President of the school three years running and has dedicated himself to the growth and success of the school. Having seen what Daniel went through, before SCY High, Hayley would like to make sure that all of San Diego's boys always have such an option. She would like to see SCY High and the San Diego Jewish community grow and to be able to see "our boys" continue to get a wonderful Jewish Education. In essence Hayley would like to see Daniel's dream continue to be a reality for many years to come.
